Extra Credit

William Bradford and John Smith bothwanted the same thing in their writings which was to make people want to come to the new world which is now America. William Braford's "Of Plymouth Plantation", was intended for future generations while John Smith's pamphlet entitled,"A Description of New England", was to get the people of England to go there during tha time period. Smith promised the people of England that America, New England at the time, was a better place and that they should go there and make their lives there. Bradford tells of his travel to America and describes the hardships associated with it and later tells how great the place was. They both had the same intentions in why they wrote these works.

Reflection Paragraph on Process

While searching for what I was looking for in this project I had many mixed feelings that I began to have midway through. Most of what i was doing was pretty easy, other than the animoto and one of my questions. I really did not like the wordle and the animoto because there were many technical problems in working on it. If I had have been given the chance to change anything about this project there really wouldnt be much I'd change. The reason I feel this way is because it is very organized. The only problem is the early deadline because some things were hard to do and took up a lot of time putting me behind, very behind. Over all, though, it was a interesting project.

Reflection Paragraph on Findings

In researching the questions that I had about this topic I found myself more and more intrigued about the Civil War. I learned why the soldiers got infections and how they died. I also learned how big a role the slaves played in tthe war. In finding answers I found somethings that were of great news to me that I had no clue about, though. Some of which were that Sherman's March To the Sea began in Georgia, rather that farther North. However, I saw that one of my questions weren't able to be answered ion my research, which was a, "What if?" question. Now I have grown to have a higher understanding of my topic, but I want to know more!

Finding Paragraph #4

On November 15, 1864 Union Major General William Tecumseh Sherman led over sixty-thousand soldiers on a march to the sea to, hopefully, break the will of the south. His path of destruction and sorrow began in the captured city of Atlanta Geogia and continued to the port of Savannah. As he progressed, he and his soldiers destroyed crops, ate the civilians food, killed livestock, took civilian possessions, then burned their homes leaving them homeless and with nothing to support thereselves. This, in turn, caused many hard ships for the South. They couldn't be shipped supplies because many of those things were destroyed and as they refused to give up the generals considered that if they kept going then they would certainly lose more land to General Sherman and his "total war" thought. So, after considering this they decided to quit or surrender to save what little they had left. This was a very successful, but costly, plan by the North.

Finding paragraph #3

My third question, "Did the Anaconda Plan cause the soldiers of the Confederacy want to surrender? Why?" was a very easy question to answer. I went to multiple websites trying to find the answer but it was in front of me all along. Yes, the Anaconda Plan helped make the Confederacy surrender because they were running out of everything. The Anaconda Plan was used to cut the South off from supplies from over seas and also helped take land from them at the same time. As the south lost more and more supplies to the union advances their will began to break. They were losing supplies for: weapons, food, water, shelter, etc. It was an ingenious plan that led to the fall of the south and the start of reconstructing their home. However, if this plan hadn't have worked then we might would have witnessed a different ending of the Civil war. Luckily, however, it did work out and we could all live in the same country in peace.

Finding paragraph #2

Another of my many questions was, "Why did more soldiers die of infections rather than the wounds themselves?" After researching the question I found at that, in fact, many soldiers indeed died of infection rather than injuries from gunshots or other kinds of fire. During that time if you were shot in the arm or leg you would most likely Have to get it amputated and because of the poor camp conditions during the Civil War infection was almost positive. However, there was more than one reason people got infection. One of which, was the fact that the tools they used to operate on them were poorly clean, or just not clean at all. The soldiers would die or almost die from these things which was even worse than dying of gunshots.

Finding paragraph #1

After researching for the past two weeks, I have discovered many things about the Civil War that I had no clue about. One of my questions were, "Did the slaves who joined the war make the difference in the outcome of it?", which was answered through the research period of the project. It turns out that slaves during the Civil War played a huge role in both sides. Twelve percent  of the Union soldiers were black slaves and joined them to help end slavery. However, some slaves joined the Confederacy because their owners forced them to. The slaves that joined, though, helped make it easier on the Southern side and Northern side for different reasons, both of which were dangerous, of course. The slaves who joined the Confederacy were sent ahead of the other troops, mainly to patrol for land mines along the roads. The slaves on the Northern side, however, were treated with much more respect. They fought along side the Union and maybe helped secure the win they required to end the war. This was very interesting to learn during my research and I hope than i can find out much more about this period in our history.

Quote, Paraphrase, and Citation #5

Quote:"The Civil War lasted from 1861 to 1865 and led to over 618,000 casualties. Its causes can be traced back to tensions that formed early in the nation's history."

Paraphrase: This time in our history was one of the most deadly out of any other war or conflict. The things that led to this, however, were unavoidable and were inevitable.

Quote, Paraphrase, Citation #4

Quote: "Today antebellum America is a far distant place. No one alive can remember it. Few people alive today have ever spoken to someone who could remember it. As a result, antebellum America is the province historians."

Paraphrase: During this time period in our history, called the Antebellum period, gave way to the industrial revolution. This caused a great increase in economy and development. Also, transportation during this time gained America the wealth it needed to get back on its feet after the devastation of the war.

Graph/chart/map and citation

In this chart you can see all the troops who served in the Civil War, and deaths on and off the battlefield. It shows you how many people stayed loyal to theUnion and how many thought the Confederacy was the way to go. it also shows that, unfortunately, the Union lost more soldiers than the South.

Quote, Paraphrase, Citation #3

Quote: "The Civil War (1861-65) was perhaps the most momentous event in American history."

Paraphrase: When Lincoln was elected president this caused South Carolina, along with many others to secede from the union under his presidency. They created their own, "country" and waged war on the Union. However, after the war the ammendment for the freedom of slaves was produced.

Quote, Paraphrase, Citation #2

Quote: "We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."
-- Abraham Lincoln, March 4, 1861, From His First Inaugural Address.

Paraphrase: A mass number of people took part in the Civil War which was about three million if you combine all the men on both sides. Many of which were young some of which were only forteen years of age!

This picture shows how brutal the war was and how people could be influenced to study/write about this period in our history. You can see how the Union soldiers are making a stand against the Confederacy, but suffering loss at the same time.

Quote, Paraphrase, Citation #1

Quote: "The first general order issued by the Father of his Country after the Declaration of Independence indicates the spirit in which our institutions were founded and should ever be defended."

Paraphrase: A war that took place over 150 years ago is still being debated today with partisans who have different views tell why they think the war started. Everyone has their own theories about the Civil War, however, we may never know the true reason behind it.

Blog Project Status

At this point in the project I have made it to the wordle with the exceptions of the animoto that I have had problems with. I currently like this more than a standard paper. The format of this site is easy to understand, also. At this point a more detailed explanation on the wordle and animoto video would be the most help. Right now I am not having problems, technical wise, more of comprehension. I could, to make this easier, reread the instructions or I could just try to focus more.

What I want to learn

As i begin to work on this project, I have many questions im asking. I hope that by studying this some of them, if not all will be answered. As of now my over all question is, "What do the books about the Civil War tell us about that time period?" Seeing as though this is a wide search I hope that by breaking it up into five questions maybe this will help widen my knowledge.
  1. Did the slaves who joined the war make the difference in the outcome of it?
  2. Why did more soldiers die of infections rather than the wounds themselves?
  3. Did the Anaconda Plan cause the soldiers of the Confederacy want to surrender? Why?
  4. How did Sherman's march break the will of the confederates?
  5. If General Lee hadn't surrendered would the war have ended in someone elses favor?

What I already know

After spending at least ten years learning about the Civil War the info I have gathered in my mind is abundant. I know much about the generals, or leaders, who led the soldiers to the fights. I also know about the families who had members in the war and what things they faced. The houses were sometimes divided and sometimes when they divide they could potentially stay that way. There were many hardships afterwards because of the lack of materials needed for reconstruction.

The story behind my topic choice

As far back as I can remember I always strived to learn more about the Civil War. Every book I have ever read about it has made me want to keep reading on and on and on. I guess the reason for me being intrigued in it is that history is my strongest area and because it's just so easy to understand. My family has often told me, "Take a break and come associate with the everyone!" I consider this subject to be the most historical of all things and should be taught more. What are the possible outcomes that could have happened? Or, why did some slaves continue to work for their former owners after being freed? These are just a few of all the things that could be taught with more depth. I hope that this will be answered and some other things that I'm asking will be as well.
